GIRO D'ITALIA: VAN EMPEL 14TH IN CESENATICO AFTER A BRUTAL DAY

Rain, climbs and punctures. This was the menu of stage 12 of the Giro d'Italia with start and finish in Cesenatico on the route of the race Nove Colli, a stage where the team Vini Zabù - Brado - KTM was brilliant with Etienne Van Empel all day at the attack.

The dutch rider, who was involved a week ago in the terrible crash that forced to the abandon of Luca Wackermann, was able to join the breakaway of fourteen riders who attacked after a tought first hour of racing.

Van Empel, who is making his debut in a GT, was able to follow the attacks of his breakaway companions but his chances of winning the stage faded with less than 60 kms to go after that he suffered a puncture that didn't let him follow the decisive attack of Jhonatan Narvaez and Mark Padun, also because of some unfair moves of the team car of the ukrainian rider.

Van Empel was caught few kms away from the finish by the Maglia Rosa group ending his stage in 14th place.

Tomorrow the race will go from Cervia to Monselice, a mostly flat stage with some short climbs in the final part
