TIRRENO - ADRIATICO: THE DREAM OF GIOVANNI VISCONTI EXPIRES AT THE FINAL KM

The walls of Marche were the scenario of an exciting stage at Tirreno - Adriatico where the dutch national champion Mathieu Van der Poel has celebrated a well deserved victory.

A very fast stage with an average of 49 km/h in the first hour and with the breakaway off only after 65 kms with a 14 riders involved including Giovanni Visconti.

In the circuit of Loreto the escapees could count on an advantage of 2'45" on a peloton pulled by team Astana with their captain Jakob Fuglsang who attacked on the second of the three laps.

Visconti was always in the first positions of the first group with Matteo Fabbro who attacked with 25 kms to go beginning the last lap with 15" on the chasers who were starting to lose some elements.

The last 22 kms were an anarchist pursuit between all the small groups that were starting the last climb to the finish inside a slot of 60 seconds.

Fabbro got caught and passed by Mathieu Van der Poel with 200 metres to go, same destiny for Giovanni Visconti who couldn't keep the pace of the captain of Alpecin - Fenix and he was caught by the peloton ending in 34th place.

"I didn't feel very good before the start - says Visconti - but once that I was in the breakaway I've started to feel quite good. The pace was hellish from the beginning and it was possible to join the breakaway only having good legs. On the circuit the race has begun to be an elimination race and I knew that it was going to be hard to stay with Van der Poel but I aimed for a better result and unfortunately there was nothing to do with the come back of the peloton. I'm getting close to the Giro d'Italia and step by step my condition is growing so I can be happy about it".

Tomorrow final stage of this Tirreno - Adriatico with the classic time trial of San Benedetto del Tronto
