Cycling in Autumn: what to wear

Autumn is a special season: you can still go bike riding without freezing but you have to pay close attention to the temperature changes. To avoid unpleasant surprises as colds or influenza, it is essential to carefully select the clothes that will be used at the start so as not to suffer from cold or heat.

Autumn is usually a big dilemma when you have to choose the right cycling apparel because you could start training with a good temperature, but end up soaked by a sudden downpour or trembling due to an unexpected drop in temperature. An effective combination of bike clothes is the key to feeling at ease. The golden rule is to protect your extremities. Feet, hands and head, in addition to legs and arms. If your body stays warm, you will pedal better.

For hands we recommend using light and water-repellent gloves to protect them from wind or rain. Warm hands are essential for not losing control of your bike. The same advice can be applied to the feet. A shoe cover would be more than enough to not feel cold. Undoubtedly, we will leave the heaviest one for the winter months.

Arm and leg warmers are other cycle accessories that you should not leave aside when choosing your cycling kit. In particular, when you face downhill you will appreciate having them readily available. Because that cold breeze is your worst enemy, especially if your body is sweating after the effort to have climbed a pass. The changes in altitude influence when you have to decide your clothing in the morning. If you are going to ride at high altitude, be careful and cover well.

The head is one of the most exposed parts, even if you use a helmet. Ventilation openings can play a dirty trick on you with low temperatures. For this reason, we advise you to wear a headband or a skullcap if you plan to ride so many meters in altitude.

Finally, to select our clothes it is important to also protect the chest. It is time to put the light, breathable summer jersey in the wardrobe to use a more heavy fabric so as not to leave your torso exposed. One option would be to wear a breathable base layer in addition to the short-sleeved shirt and combine it with a windproof vest that will allow you to have an extra pocket to store other accessories such as gloves and sleeves.

In summary, before each training check the weather forecast of the area where you plan to go out with your bicycle to choose your clothes. You will not find the same time at sea level and at 1,000 meters altitude on the same day. Prevention is always the best solution. And, as the proverb says, “better too much than not enough”.
